QMA’s Documentation Centre is a great source of information on boating with downloadable documents on topics such as the environment, legislation, studies and other subjects of interest. Documents have been contributed by interested parties in the industry and the boating community and more are added on a regular basis. If you have documents you’d like to share, please feel free to submit them to the QMA for posting.

NAUTICAL ACTIVITIES: WHAT IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT? – A LIFE CYCLE APPROACH FOR « CLEAR BLUE » BOATING
Authors : Rachel Moreau, Consultant, One Step A_head SARL - France in collaboration with: Dr. Peter Jansen, Architect, urban aqua - Germany; Dr. Hartmut Mayer, Consultant, mechanical engineer - Germany; Dipl. Ing. Klaus Roeder Naval Architect, Carpe Diem Yacht Design - Germany; Ken Wittamore, Consultant, certified mechanical engineer, Triskel Consultants Ltd – Great Britain. The study was conducted for the European Confederation of Nautical Industries – ECNI.
In September 2007, the European Confederation of Nautical Industries – ECNI published its first study on the environmental impact of boating. It showed that close to 80% of all marine pollution was generated by land based activities and concluded that boating activities accounted for less than 1% of the pollution affecting the marine environment. This second and most recent edition follows the life cycle of a pleasure boat with the intent to evaluate its environmental impact from the design and construction stages to its usage stage and ending with the mater of the treatment/disposal of the boat once its useful life is over.

Overview: in the United States, the Corps of Engineers has the responsibility to maintain navigation of waterways. The Corps dredges more than 300 million cubic yards of sediment annually.
